在我們第一篇部落格中，我們檢視了一個台灣學生很驚人的學習習慣。三個世代之久，台灣在學術上帶領世界，同時也投資了很多的金錢與努力試著要征服英文，年復一年地埋頭苦讀，希望多背的那一個單字能有些許幫助，但是投資報酬率並不理想。
不論多花了多少的時間、投資多少的金錢在這些補習班，面對基本的溝通能力，台灣人仍然持續地掙扎著。為什麼沒有用呢？
這些學習的原則在理工科目上得到極佳的效果，但是為什麼對英文卻沒有用呢？
填鴨式學習法對通過考試是非常有效的，因為它將資料存在我們腦中的短暫記憶區。
想要讓有流利的外語能力，我們需要將這個語言內化，必須使用到我們腦中的長期記憶區。語言是是最原始的、身體的一部分。能自然而然地使用大量的單字與特殊文法，都是能說流利外語的人所具備的能力。
要達成這個任務只能透過紮實地練習，沒有任何的考試或快速背單字的方法能夠做到，甚至能讓你自信地說：「是的，我會說英文。」
學習科學時，往往只有一個正確的答案，因此用背的方式記住答案或公式是容易的。
但，語言是一門藝術，並非科學。在接受這個想法後，你可以開始調整你的學習法，與其用填鴨式學習法，倒不如試著投資多一點時間在體驗這個語言上。
大家都知道，要把藝術學好要用體驗式學習法。
這也是要把語言學好的方法。

A STEAM-Powered Curriculum:
Effective, Comprehensive, Efficient Strategies for Taiwan’s New Generation
In our first Blog, we examined the amazing study habits of Taiwanese students. For the last 3 generations, Taiwanese have led the world in Academics. Taiwanese also spend a lot of money and effort on trying to conquer the English language by cramming away at it year after year after year, hoping that just a little more cramming will help.
The Return on Investment is not good at all.
Taiwanese continue to struggle with basic conversation skills, no matter how much time and money they spend on cram schools. Why isn’t it working?
The same principles of dedication have worked incredibly well in STEM subjects.
Why hasn't it worked for English?
Cramming, while useful for passing tests, works with short term memory.
To become even close to fluent, we need to feel the language in our guts, deep down where long term memory resides. Language is visceral. It’s primal. The ability to recall vast amounts of vocabulary, or tricky little grammar faux-pas’ are just two telltale signs of all successful L2 people.
This can only be accomplished through dedicated practice. No amount of cramming and testing can prepare you to take your place among those that say, “Yes. I do speak English.”
In Science, there is only one right answer. Therefore, it is easier to retain the answer or the formula in question.
BUT….Language is ART, not science.
By accepting that language is an art, you can begin to modify your study methods. Instead of cramming, spend time experiencing the language.
Experiential Learning is how Art is learned.
And it is how language is learned.
